Do I Need QuickBooks Online (QBO) to Work With You?

Most of my clients are on QuickBooks Online — it's the best tool I've found for managing construction business finances, especially job costing across multiple projects. If you're already on QBO, great. If you're on QuickBooks Desktop, that works too — I'm certified in both.

If you're not on any bookkeeping software yet, or you're using something else and not happy with it, we'll talk about what fits. The right tool depends on your business size, the number of projects you run, and what reporting you actually need. Setup or migration to QBO is part of what I do.

What is Subcontractor Compliance, and Why Does It Matter?

Subcontractor compliance means making sure every sub you pay has proper documentation: a signed W-9 on file, a current certificate of insurance, and a 1099 issued at year-end if they hit the IRS threshold.

Why it matters: if a sub doesn't carry their own insurance and gets hurt on your job, you could end up on the hook. If 1099s aren't issued correctly, the IRS can disallow the expense — meaning you pay tax on money you already paid out. And in Minnesota specifically, worker classification (the 14-point test) determines whether someone is a true subcontractor or actually an employee. Misclassify a worker and the consequences can include back taxes, unemployment insurance, workers' comp premiums, and sometimes a Department of Labor investigation.

I keep all of this organized year-round, so when audit letters or 1099 deadlines arrive, you're already ready.

Are You a CPA?

No — I'm a bookkeeper and operational consultant, not a tax preparer. The two roles are different, and I'd rather do my role excellently than try to do both badly.

What this means in practice: I keep your books clean, organized, and structured around how a construction business actually works — accurate financials, real job costing, MN-specific compliance handled. Your CPA (or you, if you self-file) handles the tax return itself, using the clean books I prepare. Most construction owners are better off with both a bookkeeper and a CPA than trying to find one person who does everything.

Do You Work With Construction Businesses Only?

Construction is my specialty and most of my clients are construction-based — framing, GCs, plumbing, electrical, remodeling, subcontractors of every trade. The MN-specific compliance work (prevailing wage, certified payroll, subcontractor classification) is a real differentiator for that audience.

That said, I do work with non-construction clients too — small businesses, nonprofits, and the occasional unusual situation. If your work overlaps with construction (you're a vendor to contractors, you run a related trade, you're in real estate development), there's usually a fit. If you're outside construction entirely, we can still talk — I'll be honest with you on the call about whether I'm the right person for what you need.
